Answering your question - what is a separating funnel

There is a question in sec 1's science work book, page 63, mentioned 'separating funnel'.

Here is a picture that I found in the net.

As it is shown, it is used to separate mixture of liquids. E.g. you can use it to separate water from oil.

Answering Your Questions - gas chromatography

Eunice asked me what is 'gas chromatography'?

My simple answer here is, gas chromatography uses the same principle like paper chromatography. (I assume that you already know what paper chromatography is.)

Firstly, like paper chromatography, the sample mixture you want to separate is in small quantity. In paper chromatography, the sample is a colour dye mixture. In gas chromatography, it is a mixture of chemical compounds.

Secondly, it needs a carrier. In paper chromatography, the carrier is a solvent, e.g. alcohol. In gas chromatograpgy, the carrier (inert) gas acts like a solvent, it will carry the different components of the chemicals at different speed.

Thirdly, in paper chromatography, you see different colour bands being displayed. In gas chromatogragphy, different components of chemical being seperated and detected by the detector as the result.

For more details, the link on on gas chromatogrpahy is here.
